A medic with time on his hands (oxymoron!)...if only http://swiftdeck.posterous.com A place for me to vomit out my thoughts and ideas with anyone who's interested. posterous.com Sat, 27 Oct 2012 07:07:00 -0700 Foramina of the skull http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/foramina-of-the-skull http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/foramina-of-the-skull

Ahoy there, Imagine a crazy dude who drinks hot chocolate from cups made from skulls. He'll have a hard time drinking from his cup that he got from slaying giant dark creatures of mordor brought from ebay cos skulls are full of holes. It's annoying as it is important to know which structures pass through the various skull foramina (you know they're gonna ask a measely one marker question on it one day). To help I thought it'll be nice to make a foramina of the skull visual mnemonic. For simplicity, I've used arabic numerals instead of roman.

Foramina

Get your lateral thinking caps on: What can be white and full of holes, but still hold the crazy man's beverage?

A white sponge.

Welcome to Spiderman's favourite biochemical pathway. Why is it his favourite pathway you ask? Well, his spider-sense positively tingles as he knows that by understanding the arachidonic acid pathway, he can figure out the mechanisms of how some of the important common drugs help to reduce inflammation.

Arachidonic_acid_pathway
Interestingly my favourite pathway is the ethanol production pathway in yeast. Why? Because I don't need to learn it.

What's kinda white, sticky and comes out of a man's thingy? The result of a horrible, horrible bacterial infection... or semen. Below is an overview of spermatogenesis, touching on all the main points you'll hopefully need to know.

Fri, 12 Aug 2011 04:28:36 -0700 Middle ear anatomy http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/middle-ear-anatomy http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/middle-ear-anatomy

Hear's an ear joke... What! You thought that was lame! Well, your ears are so big that you make prince charles bunnies cry. It's been a while since I last posted; I couldn't help it, beating up rioters is bloody time-consuming. Anywho, below is my notes on the middle ear, showing all the relations and stuff in a right lateral view.

Middle_ear_anatomy_sp

I does look like I've vomited information, and to be frank, I have lol. If you dunno where to look, focus on a particular wall and move around like that. Hopefully you'll be able to create a 3D view of the middle ear in your mind's eye and work out how different structures would be affected in certain middle ear pathologies. Peace out.

Thu, 07 Apr 2011 01:37:56 -0700 Phaeochromocytoma ...come again? http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/phaeochromocytoma-come-again http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/phaeochromocytoma-come-again

What!? Some chinese dudes engineered cows that can make human milk?? (chocolate milk FTW!), Let hope those guys don't start making those udder starting resembling you know what; don't want newborns to get confused calling cows 'mama'... anyhoo, I thought I'd share with you guys an article I about phaeochromocytoma on medical notes website called Fastbleep. Its pretty cool, you can submit articles on various medical topics. Below are some of the pictures I made for the article (link here: http://www.fastbleep.com/medical-notes/endocrine-and-breast/23/63/406)

Why phaeochromocytoma you may ask? Cause I can! lol, but seriously, imagine having a condition that makes you go berserk sounds kinda interesting, well thats how LL Cool J portrayed it when he apparently had in it an episode of House, but then again, thats him on a good day, or am I just confusing him with Chris Brown?

- random thought; if oxen (plural of ox!) where engineered to make human milk, I bet it'll be all hairy and stuff.. yuck -

Sun, 20 Mar 2011 04:28:48 -0700 Comparing gastric and duodenal ulcers http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/comparing-gastric-and-duodenal-ulcers http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/comparing-gastric-and-duodenal-ulcers

I was sittting and I thought, "Why's the toilet on fire"? Man, that paneer did not bode well with my tummy; it felt like a sadistic dragon was trying to escape, and for a split moment thought the fire alarm might go off (note to self; hold back on the chillis!). In light of my recent first third degree ass burns, I thought I'd talk about the differences between gastric and duodenal ulcers...

The main take-home message is all about the pain, where it moves, when it comes. Once you got that down, you're sorted. Adios amigos, till next time...

Fri, 11 Mar 2011 16:33:00 -0800 Amino acids and their properties...yawn... http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/amino-acids-and-their-propertiesyawn http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/amino-acids-and-their-propertiesyawn

Holy guacamole! It’s been ~two months since I last posted (note to self, never buy an alarm clock from poundland). So anyways, I was cleaning my room yesterday (not out of my own free will, just don't wanna get beaten up by my mum) and happened upon my notes from last year. I remember having to learn the amino acids and their properties, which was worse than being repeatedly head-butted in the groin by an army of midgets vertically challenged people. I figured out a way to make learning about the amino acids and their properties more memorable (and less painful)...

The diagram is pretty self-explanatory; one important note, I've used the one-letter amino acid nomenclature. If you're not familiar with it, this site (http://www.bioinf.manchester.ac.uk/dbbrowser/jj/aacodefrm.html) has the single-letter codes for the amino acids. Peace out homies...

Fri, 31 Dec 2010 15:30:00 -0800 Liver function tests http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/liver-function-tests http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/liver-function-tests

Half an hour to 2011 and here I am, learning about liver function tests. Before I go pour myself a hot cup of cocoa and shout-sing 'Auld Lang Syne' to annoy the neighbours (take that for not recycling plastics!), I thought I'll share how I go about understanding the liver function tests...

Liver_function_tests0001

By properly understanding where the enzymes/components are, if you get any question on interpreting LFTs, you can work out where the damage is. Btw, for AST, its found in the heart, skeletal muscle and kidneys (if you didn't understand the symbols). As usual, if I've made a mistake or you don't get my handwriting, holla in the comments.

To learn the various compounds that are used to test for liver function, I made this mnemonic = P BAAAAG (aah...mnemonics, the cornerstones of medical education)

Thu, 30 Dec 2010 04:32:00 -0800 Innate vs Adaptive immunity... game on... http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/37886816 http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/37886816

Ooo...New Years coming, guess what I'm gonna be doing? On my bum watching TV hitting the books hard! I have to study a module called Infection & Immunity, and to learn the main gist of the innate and adaptive immune system and compare them, I came up with this:

Compammune_systems

By using the mnemonic 'DIMES', it should help you cover the main aspects of the different immune responses. Btw, the 'mono kills granny' thing I got from the youtube video below. Watch it, its awesome :)

If you don't get the picture, or if you notice any mistakes, lemme know and you'll be doing everyone a favour.

Thu, 30 Dec 2010 04:21:00 -0800 Mediastinum contents http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/37885238 http://swiftdeck.posterous.com/37885238

Hello world, this is my first blog ever (such a virgin...) anyhow, I have to learn the contents of the various mediastinum for exams. After a while of doodling, I came up with the picture as shown:

Mediastinum_help
One thing I have to apologise for is my handwriting, so if you find it completely illegible or basically you don't get it, holla in the comments :D

(P.S. if you don't know who Terry Tate is the video below should help :)
